Reaching out to network

Hey guys.. so before I landed my current gig I networked good amount and a couple guys i spoke/met couple times. One of the guys is an Executive at a firm who loved me.. spoke multiple times, invited me to his office. After I landed my gig I told him we'll grab a drink and about my role and he was happy for me. It's been 3 months since I started and going to reach out to meet up. My current role is just not working out and not what I expected. Do I tell him the truth and say something like.." To be honest, it wasn't the career move I had hoped for, but I am at a reputable shop and going to make the best of it and learn as much as I can".. if I say this there might be an opening at his firm in future and he could remember me. Or just say it's going well and that's that.

Thoughts? How do you guys going about keeping contact after you landed a gig?

IMO, I would leave the part out about it not being what you want to do. Focus on the fact that you are at a reputable firm, and that you are learning a lot. If there is ever an opening at his firm or you want to work there in the future, stay in contact with him and shoot him an email every other week. What I've found to work for me, take a day and reach out to all of your contacts and develop them from work contacts, into relationships. One day of networking pays dividends.

Bumping because we ended up having to reschedule multiple times but we are finally catching up later this week.

So I am about to go into my 6th month here..how do I respond when he asks how it's going as I hate it here and I am pretty much not doing what I expected? I don't want to sound like a whiner or someone who hasn't given it a chance but other than duties not what I thought..I really hate the office culture.

How do I subtlety imply I want to work at his firm when there's an opening?
