Real Estate Investment Routes

I am currently interning at a commercial real estate development company doing typical analyst work and have become increasingly interested in RE development, RE private equity, etc as a career path. I am in my sophomore summer and looking for some guidance on what path I should take for my internship next year (junior year summer). I was pretty set on pursuing IB, mostly for the exit opportunities afterwards, but lately have been looking into a lot of real estate investing firms. Basically, my question is would it be more beneficial to me, if I did decide to pursue a career in real estate, to go the IBD route and seek real estate after or try and get into a good real estate internship program at a firm like Hines, JLL, MS RE, etc? I am coming from a semi-target school so in terms of IBD I would probably be looking at a middle market bank as opposed to BB.
