Real Estate Networking

I'm looking for everyone's tips on "networking." I understand that its all about developing relationships, and to the point where you and the other party should feel mutually comfortable giving advice and helping in a course of action by referring you to additional sources.

However, starting out can seem simple, yet difficult. With that said, I invite all you Real Estate heads to spill your guts, and start jotting down your best networking tips, hints, groups, success stories, or anything you feel would be relevant towards this thread.

For starters, it should be clear that networking in the context of real estate private equity and the like is no different from the networking tips that have been talked to death in every other PE/IBD discussion here on WSO and at M&I.

Having said that, I should mention that Bill Poorvu likes to suggest a "local" approach. If you are in a position to join the reit/lodging group at Goldman Sachs, then you can ignore this, but if you are really having serious trouble getting your foot in the door in any way possible, start where you have the most relationships. For example, if you grew up in Denver and went to University of Denver, this could mean going through a family friend to intern with a developer in Denver, as opposed to banging on doors in NY or London.

This might sound like common sense, but a lot of people forget that there are solid firms everywhere and not just in global financial hubs. Beyond just landing a job in a desk somewhere, you could advance more quickly in the industry and in your career if you already personally know a number of players in your market.
