Reneging Internship I've accepted an extension for
Hey everyone,
I’m facing a bit of a dilemma and could really use some advice from those who have been in a similar position.
Here’s the situation:
- I’ve already accepted an internship offer for summer/fall 2025 with a company that I’m excited to work with. It’s a great opportunity and aligns with my career goals.
- Now, I’m considering another internship offer for fall 2025 with a different firm, which offers more international exposure and could help me develop skills that are highly relevant for my long-term career path.
- My ultimate goal is to land an internship with a top-tier firm for summer 2026, and I believe the second opportunity might help strengthen my resume and give me an edge in the application process.
The challenge is that by taking the second offer, I’d essentially be breaking my commitment to the first company, which I worry could damage my professional reputation. I’m unsure if the potential benefits of the second opportunity are worth the risk of leaving my original internship early.
Considerations:
- I’m thinking about the long-term career trajectory and how to make myself the best candidate for top firms.
- I know both companies are great, but the second opportunity seems like it might offer more in terms of global exposure and a different learning experience.
Has anyone faced a similar situation? How did you balance your commitments and long-term career goals? Is it worth breaking a commitment to pursue a potentially better opportunity for the future?
Would love to hear any insights or advice you might have!

WSO Insights on Reneging:
Ultimately, the decision depends on your risk tolerance and how much you value integrity versus the potential benefits of the second opportunity. If you’re leaning toward reneging, consider the long-term impact on your career and whether the short-term gain is worth the potential reputational cost.
Congrats on securing the internship. You need to take a step back and look at the bigger picture here because you’re putting way too much pressure on yourself over an internship... in reality this will be the most insignificant decision you’ll make in the course of your professional career. If you have no intention of working for option 1, and option 2 better aligns with your long term goals, take option 2. Just give whoever extended the offer a call (not email) and respectfully explain your decision. It’s an internship… no one in CRE will care in the long run if you rescind on an internship offer.
Relax. It’s an internship. Take the one you’ve accepted already. International exposure etc etc is a load of bollox. You want to learn about real estate and you’ve already got one sorted. Chill out
