Student Real Estate Contests

Curious if anyone has participated in student real estate contests? Are these looked well upon in the industry for recruiting? Can one expect to learn useful skills? Good networking? Curious from an experienced hire perspective.

They are usually fairly well thought of. I would say it's not extremely helpful but it gives a slight boost on the resume. I have competed in them and have also interviewed people who have done them. Usually it provides something to talk about in the interview and if nothing else gives a tangible example of modeling, conceptual understanding, and interpersonal skills of the candidate. In short I'd say they are worth doing.

"Who am I? I'm the guy that does his job. You must be the other guy."

Yes, they are beneficial in multiple ways. Not only do they allow for hands-on, practical use of knowledge, as opposed to case studies, they also offer great networking opportunities. The competitions I've competed in provided a list of local experts in various market sectors (leasing, development, construction, financing, etc.) that provide real-time metrics and information needed to get your concept across the finish line. Lean on these experts, pick their brains and be memorable. Then, once the competition is over, continue to stay in touch with them and leverage your relationship. It is easier than you think to stand out from the pack. Winning is a definite value add to your resume, but competing alone demonstrates initiative.

I was a captain and a finalist in a national competition but didn't win and a captain and a finalist in a program competition and did win.

They're beneficial for the experience, and especially for personal growth, but they were very rarely asked about in interviews and no one particularly cared. They often aren't very applicable to real life situations.

If I was interviewing you, I would definitely bring it up if it was on a resume, but no one seemed that interested.
