Tips on estimating contractor labor costs by region in this market?

Not in RE but I was wondering if any of you guys had any insight on this for someone looking to build a home. I'm thinking of building a home, renting a room out and then using this as an experience to determine whether I want to get into RE. I've read some books but they were a bit outdated.

Anyway, tips  on calculating contractor and labor costs? Should I just call up people?
