Transition from Structured Finance (CMBS / RMBS) to Real Estate (Owner / Operator / REPE)
I spent 2+ years working in CMBS issuance and half a year in an RMBS accountant role (for avoidance of doubt, not actually accounting). I am hoping to make a pivot to something closer to the collateral and have been considering a masters degree at UW in Real Estate. While I believe I have the requisite fundamentals already, I fear leaving my RMBS role for a real estate oriented role would strike recruiters and interviewers with a bit of confusion and solely indicate I have no idea what I am doing (I guess I don't). Is the master's in real estate worth the time / money or are there enough opportunities out there to make the jump? I am currently based in NYC.
