Uncertain of what To Do Next
I've been at my firm for 4-5 years at this point doing office leasing at a major REIT. First 2-3 years were great for learning and networking. However, I'm severely underpaid (embarrassed to even share) and see absolutely 0 growth where I am. Huge firm and great reputation, but honestly the leadership is complete garbage right now and my team's morale has never been lower.
I have great industry relationships and stuff, and have punched above my weight to get interviews elsewhere, but I'm either over or under qualified for the LIMITED amount of roles that are ever even posted. There's barely opportunities; but when they do come up, i usually get a shot at them, but they end up nowhere. It doesn't seem to be a interview/resume problem -- always seems to be something out of my control (internal hire, role is removed, under/over qualified, etc). I honestly ace most interviews.
I'm kind of reaching a breaking point now. I've been actively looking for 2.5+ years (and more aggressively lately) but just feels helpless. Barely have any motivation to do good work and feel that is also impacting my performance.
Been applying to corporate roles/tenant roles/other landlords but to no avail. I know the market is shit, but what do i do? Honestly worried i may get laid off before i find a new role and I'm trying to get ahead of that. I feel so stuck, and its' really unfair given how much potential i have and how much i want to work with a good team / in a role i am actually capable for.
Have you considered leasing brokerage? Obviously not for everyone but with your experience and connections I'd imagine you could go to any of the top office teams in your market.
Yes I have - brokerage is just something I don't have a passion for and am honestly not interested in. Feel like I'd also be starting from scratch and be a tiny fish in a huge ocean.
I’m betting no because of the state of the market, but are you able to move within the firm to more of an asset management role? You already know the assets.
Wish I had an easy answer for you on this. Honestly, brokerage is probably the only place thats really hiring because its eat what you kill. Any Acq shop or doing AM has so much competition right now in terms of candidates.
