Verbal Offer Rescinded

I received a full-time verbal offer from a major real estate consultancy company, but it was withdrawn due to budgetary reasons. The process was fast, in 3 weeks i interviewed with director of the team and head ofs and than verbal offer. Where did i failed? Did they do a background check? or is it common to have verbal offer to multiple candidates?

Highly likely that the error is on their end, not yours.

Honestly, don't sweat it or overthink it. On the bright side, better it happened now versus working there for a few weeks or months.

For lateral hires, how much of this do people think is on the firm backchanneling references? Not seeing this mentioned yet.

Generally agree in current cycle firms are headcount tight but figured a friendly "we have to put the process on pause for a while" rather than flat out rescinding would be the message.

Years ago a close friend was lateraling and his verbal was rescinded - we both laugh about it now. Great name that ended up struggling in this cycle.
