Vetting Capital Partners
I get a lot of LinkedIn messages offering introductions to institutional capital, from people who don’t work for any of the big name brokerage shops. On one hand, I don’t want to waste my time if they’re not legit, but on the other, it seems like a 30 minute call to size them up would be worth it if it plays out well. How do you go about vetting these sorts of things?
Oh god, the infamous linkedin messages. I got messages from so many random people saying the same thing. You click their profile and their picture is all grainy or something dumb. This one guy claimed he could raise $5-$50M in LP equity in the message. His profile pic was him in a tank top drinking beer in what appeared to be a tiki hut. I try not to judge a book by its cover, but it didn't help that he graduated from Strayer University either.
