Investment Bankers in general are advisors for companies when that are looking to raise financing (ex: bond issuance, IPO, follow-on offerings, private placement, etc) or when they are looking to merge with or acquire other companies. So real estate coverage bankers are advising real estate corporations (REIT’s) when they want financing at an entity level (which is very common because real estate is a leveraged business) or when they want to pursue M&A.
In regards to salary, the base is the same as any other groups in IB which usually range from 110k - 120k. Bonus on that can range from 30% - 100% give or take, depending on the market or the deal volume of the real estate coverage group / overall bank.
Same as the rest of the IB but you cover REITs.
