When interviewing, is it ok to say that my nickname at school is "The Machine"?
Shows them my humour etc. Basically people call me this name at school because I'm a beast in excel and RE. People call me it when I walk by them in the hallway. Some kid I didn't even know called me the Machine in a class earlier this year. For example here's a sample use:
Person A: "Oh man, I have no idea how to do this assignment"
Person B: "Don't worry, don't you remember 'The Machine' is in our group? He's got this"
Thoughts?
No.
"The Machine" makes you sound like a robot and loser, as if the only skill you have is apparently your ability to do work and nothing else.
Someone self-reporting that his nickname is the "The Machine" will just sound stupid
I see what you're saying but the emphasis is like this: "The MaCHHHINEEEE" so its obviously a positive thing
Only if you have your mom call you mid-interview to tell you to bring home matzoh ball soup in a Yiddish accent so that everyone knows that you're a Jewish machine..
Am I the only one cracking the fuck up at this? lmao
Please. Just don't do this. Just trying to save you some embarrassment.
Ok I guess I will avoid
unfortunately while there's nothing horribly wrong with it in a vacuum, in real-time it's gonna be so dependent on the listener and the delivery and other variables. save it for after you get the offer
It's not what you say (in an interview/life), it's HOW you say it.
2.a. link for anyone wanting a good laugh:
I mean I'm not the one that stole it -the person who first called me stole it. That was an amazing video though and pretty relevant as I'm a russian haha
Let the haters hate Machine!
You’re the best
You need to get laid dude. Dumbest post I’ve ever read on this site.
Aww cmon dude. Imagine having a coworker nicknamed "The Machine", defs someone I'd like to work with, atleast it shows that they're not serious and have humour
in no way should anyone coming out of school be bragging even the slightest amount about being a "beast in excel and real estate".
agree with cpgame that this is outright dumb.
depending on the job, employers generally want to see work ethic, humility and lack of entitlement. this means someone who will be willing to learn, work hard and won't think they know more than the boss.
calling yourself the machine, out loud, in front of other people, in an interview, goes against all of the above.
if someone else recognizes you and walks by and says it... well that might be cool. but if you say it yourself its really bad.
Exactly. Prove your worth and let other people call you what they want. Humility is everything.
Simple. Just put it on your resume. First Name “The Machine” Last Name
I model my life after the "Machine" from the film, "8MM".
If I had an interviewee go out of their way to tell me that their college nickname is "the machine", regardless of the genesis of the nickname, I might give you a rye smile, chuckle for a second, and end the interview within 3 minutes.
Nice to have self-confidence, but when it spills over into sounding or being arrogant, self-serving or condescending, hiring managers will show you the door in a hurry. Lots of people out there who are very good at the skillset that has earned you the moniker of the machine.
Just check out the interview with Brian Wilson where "the machine" walks through the background. Thats what I picture.
Life lesson: never give yourself or self-report a nickname
Also, if your friends at school give you a nickname due to your skill in Excel and real estate, you guys really need to relax and enjoy college a bit more.
How bad do you want this job? Tell me when and where and I’ll show up and randomly walk through the office and scream “OMG EVERYONE ITS THE MACHINNNNEEEE. JUST GOT HOME AND LEAVE YOUR WORK AT YOUR DESK. HE WILL TAKE CARE OF EVERYTHING”
kind of insulting to the original machine bert kreischer
do the damn thang machine!!! 99.9% chance you crush the interview with this approach and get Managing Director offers from Oaktree/Blackstone RE
with a nickname like that you really don't even need to interview.
please PM for immediate employment contract at +6figs.
Oh boy, you would kill it if you went into brokerage.
currently interviewing for a few brokerage positions haha. One interviewer asked me if I got in a fist fight before (as I'm from Alberta)
Did you at least reply that you have punched your computer screen before because you wanted to crush the numbers
