When to apply for jobs in a new city

Hi,

I am looking at moving from LA to NY in/around April of next year (stuck in a lease until then and will reach my two year mark at my current shop).

Does anyone have advice on when to start actively applying to jobs in a city that you are planning on moving too? I don't want to apply too early and not be able to move and therefore waste potential employers time with interviewing. Obviously networking is important and will work to keep on making intro's to people in the industry out there. I more so want to know when to start reaching out to recruiters and actively apply to jobs in NY? I work at a small shop so would not be able to try and switch to the same company in NY.

Any insight is much appreciated. Thanks!
