I don't think you can generalize firms like this. Every developer and team will have unique structure, culture, etc. A lot of which will be determined by the type of projects they do and the markets they operate within. Urban high rise developers will operate differently than suburban apartment developers and retail developers are way off in their own world (or so it seems at times).
We have a few people who used to work for Hines at my company, they talk about how different each region/office in Hines can be across the country (their structure appears to empower regional leadership, not uncommon). This seems to be true for a lot of firms. The west coast offices will not have the same culture/operational tempo/etc. as the east coast ones.
So, I think you just have to figure everything out case by case.
