Activities Section is No Longer Overlooked
Based on what I've gathered from friends, connections in the industry, and other websites, I've come to the conclusion that the activities section on one's resume isn't as useless as it looks. By that I mean that some jobs find certain activities off-putting. For example, if I'm applying to a steady office job and I list "extreme sports" as an activity, then I may come off as risky. On the other hand, if I list something as simple as "traveling" or "chess," then I have a hard time standing out...
Does anyone have any experience with which way is better? While you probably won't get tossed out based on your activities alone, this section, I feel, is often underrated.
Lastly, I've heard mixed reviews on how to go about the activities section in that some prefer to list their activities while others elaborate on one or two activities... Example: "Surfing, snowboarding, chess" vs. "I participate in competitive chess tournaments, and I hold a current rating of ____." Thanks!
