Background Check

I have 2 unpaid internships on the my resume and I am concerned that the background check wont show that I worked there. Has anyone been through this situation and if so what happens when the background check happens?

Based on the most helpful WSO content, it's common for candidates to have concerns about how unpaid internships are verified during background checks. Here's what typically happens:

  • Verification Process: Background checks can include verification of past employment, including unpaid internships. The process usually involves reaching out to the organization or supervisor listed to confirm the period of employment and the role held.

  • Documentation: If there's a concern that an unpaid internship might not be verifiable through standard means, it's a good idea to keep any documentation that can prove the tenure there, such as emails, letters, or any certificates of completion.

  • Communication: If a background check fails to verify an unpaid internship, the hiring company might ask for additional information or proof. It's crucial to be honest and provide any information that can support your claim.

  • Proactive Approach: If you're worried about the verification of your unpaid internships, you could proactively discuss this with the hiring manager or HR representative and explain the situation, providing them with contacts or documentation that can help verify your experience.

Remember, honesty is key in these situations. Misrepresenting your experience can have far more negative consequences than a simple verification hiccup.

Here is a question that you might be interested in and I can help you with: Are unpaid internships verified as a part of background checks?
