I'm afraid you really need to tailor each cover letter to the bank. A template won't get you anywhere - if anything it'll do more harm than good.

Try mention these points for each application (in addition to the skills you've already outlined):

ABOUT THE FIRM

• Firm initiatives/awards that resonate with you?

• League table?

• Recent trade/investment/statement by CEO?

• Do I follow a stock that his firm manages?

• Have I had work experience here before?

ABOUT THE ROLE

• What opportunities does the scheme give you that you are looking forward to?

• What particular work excites you?

• What skills can you apply and develop?

This is old. I got quite a bit of replies. As mentioned in major posts, generic isn't a big deal with CL's and they aren't really read. 

I appreciate the ideas, but just bugs me a bit that what you said doesn't have much of a footing.
