Frat pledgemaster - include on CV?

See title. My extracurriculars are a bit lacking (partially because being PM is decently time consuming) but I have been hesitant to put it on my resume because of stigmas around greek life and hazing. Do you think this would raise any red flags or maybe show some admirable qualities like leadership, teambuilding, etc.?

If it came up in a behavioral, how would you go about discussing pledge education activities?

Based on the most helpful WSO content, including a fraternity position on your resume can be a double-edged sword. It's all about how you frame it. Here are some points to consider:

  • Leadership and Team Building: If you held a position like a pledgemaster, it could demonstrate leadership, organizational, and team-building skills. Highlight the management and coordination aspects of your role, focusing on how you led a team, organized events, and maintained schedules.

  • Philanthropy and Community Service: Emphasize any philanthropic events you organized or participated in. This can show a commitment to community service and the ability to work towards a common good.

  • Behavioral Interview: If asked about your pledge education activities in a behavioral interview, focus on the positive aspects. Talk about how you managed to keep cool under pressure, resolved conflicts, or how you helped integrate new members into the organization's culture in a positive and constructive way.

  • Avoid Negative Connotations: Stay clear of any activities that could be interpreted as hazing or anything that carries a negative stigma. Stick to the aspects of the role that are universally seen as positive and professional.

  • Tailor Your CV: Consider the company culture where you are applying. If it's a more conservative firm, they might not appreciate the inclusion of a fraternity role. However, if the firm has a more relaxed culture or if you know they value such experiences, it might be beneficial to include it.

  • Know Your Audience: If you can, research the interviewer's background. If they were part of Greek life, they may view your experience more favorably.

Remember, it's not just about having the position on your resume, but how you articulate the skills and experiences gained from it. Always be prepared to discuss the value you brought to the role and how it's relevant to the job you're applying for.
