How to Market Deal Experience on Resume for Internship

Hi all,

I am currently doing an IB internship (off-cycle) and am trying to go through some FT processes and want to update my resume. I am currently on 3 deals (none of which have closed). I would love to put on my resume a selected transaction, without company name obviously, and show that I do have deal experience.

My question: Can I even put any selected transaction on my resume if the deal hasn't closed yet? If I can't put a selected transaction, do I just hit on deliverables I have contributed towards on my resume instead?

Thanks in advance!

Based on the most helpful WSO content, here’s how you can approach marketing deal experience on your resume during an internship:

  1. Include Selected Transactions (Even if Not Closed):
It is acceptable to list selected transactions on your resume even if the deals haven’t closed. However, you must ensure that you describe your contributions in a way that highlights your role without disclosing sensitive or confidential information. Avoid mentioning company names or specific details that could breach confidentiality.

  2. Focus on Deliverables and Contributions:
If the deal hasn’t closed, emphasize the tasks you’ve completed and the value you’ve added. For example, you can write something like:

    • "Conducted due diligence and financial analysis for a potential $XXM acquisition in the Industry sector."
    • "Prepared valuation models and pitch materials for a $XXM cross-border M&A transaction."
  3. Be Specific About Your Role:
Highlight the specific aspects of the deal process you were involved in, such as due diligence, financial modeling, preparing presentations, or assisting in negotiations. This demonstrates your hands-on experience and understanding of the deal process.

  4. Avoid Misrepresentation:
Do not overstate your involvement or imply that the deal has closed if it hasn’t. Transparency is key, as interviewers may probe into the details during interviews.

  5. Use General Descriptions for Confidentiality:
If confidentiality is a concern, use general terms like "advised on a $XXM transaction in the Industry sector" or "supported a potential acquisition for a leading Industry company."

By focusing on your contributions and maintaining confidentiality, you can effectively showcase your deal experience, even if the transactions are still in progress.
