Name dropping in cover letters

Hello guys! Im thinking of applying to a BB and need some help with my cover letter.

I bumped into an exec director a few months back, although from a completely different country and division to the one that im applying for. How do i drop his name in my cover letter?

Maybe "I was fortunate to speak with _______, Executive Director of ____, and was impressed with your firm's commitment to ______."

If you know him and have maintained contact it might be worth shooting them an email. "Hello____. I saw there was a posting in xx division and I was wondering if it would be okay to reference our conversation etc. etc?" I think it's better to get someone's permission if you're going to drop their name and best case scenario they might know someone over there and put in the good word. Worst case scenario you have manners as I don't think most people would object if you asked.
