Skills section on resume
I looked around and couldn't find any definitive answers on the forum. How do we feel about the 'skills' section on a resume when applying to an IB SA or FT role?
I have plenty of computer skills (python, c, SQL), but I'm only meh with excel (I need to take a course and practice).
People have horror stories about being grilled on excel because it was in their skills section—something I'm fairly certain would end my interview immediately. I'm thinking about removing the section entirely, but...I'm worried that it'll mean a pass-over by the computer resume scanning services that HR uses. Maybe it's odd not to have...just cause that's the norm.
Would love to hear from people that have played a role hiring/interviewing!
Just for a data point - I'm in the process with banks right now and a return offer, no skills section on my resume
To follow up, in my bullet points / content, I made sure to meaningfully incorporate skills I want to highlight, don't just throw them in, but make sure they are there as well. Helpful to provide context around the skills, haven't been grilled yet.
That’s awesome. Curious as to which banks those would be considering all the threads regarding which banks are still running FT processes
thanks—incorporating skills into bullets is probably the correct thing to do. Do you include any test scores? I have a 35 on my ACT and I figure it looks decent at this point, but honestly don't know where I would include it.
Feel like having a "test" section would be weird since I don't really have anything else to put there.
I do. that's a great score, definitely include it.
Would having a 1510 out of 1600 on the SAT be worthy enough to list on there, or no point? (Never took the ACT btw) Thank you?
I would include it, especially if you go to a nontarget. For reference, I'm a TA for a class at my school where I help students make their resumes and the general rule of thumb is to include it if it's over 1450 (especially when you're still in the early/middle stages of college)
I just put it under education. I have my SAT and ACT scores and just make a bullet for tests under my college GPA
