Mich Ross in state is a really good deal, but I would go to Wharton or Harvard at full fare over Mich in state if given the option. It really depends how strong these hooks are - ie if he's a sure thing to get into Harvard then its worth it.

Once you get accepted, can't you just defer your enrollment? When I was a senior, someone in my grade got accepted to her top school (I think it was Michigan State actually), but also wanted to do a gap year so she contacted the admission department to see if she could do a gap year without having to reapply and they worked something out. Every school is different though. I know for the school I went to I could have deferred my enrollment for a year and then gone back without having to reapply and receiving the same amount of scholarship. for a different school I got admitted to, it was pretty much the same except I had to tell admissions what I was going to spend my year doing (i.e. not just sitting at home but wither working, traveling, learning a language, ect) and then if the reason was good enough they would defer me till the next year. I would ask admissions and see if Michigan has some type of deferred enrollment that isn't a biding agreement (i.e. you can take the gap year and not have to reapply, but only if you agree to enroll there the next school year).

Fair.

Here in the UK people take gap years all the time (most first years are between 18-20 years old, many even older). Usually they'll work part-time or full-time to garner up a nice cushion for uni and then blow the rest on travelling. It's a great time to really learn about what you want to do in life and as cliché as it sounds to "find yourself".

Took one myself and wouldn't have done otherwise.

Was obsessed with finance, now do product in tech

I was curious so I checked the Ross BBA employment report and 20.4% made it into investment banking and the other outcomes were solid as well. You're saying he's been admitted and it's free...so the ROI is essentially infinity. To me this isn't worth deliberating. Besides what's the pitch to his parents? "Well, I'm taking a year off so I can apply to an Ivy League school and...yup, that's my plan."

dude just hit the jackpot. Gets to go to ross which has tons of exposure to finance and consulting.... but also gets to party his face off and watch a national championship football run. I wish I had transferred to Michigan.
