Are there any chances of getting into business school?

Hi WSO,

I tried to write in a different firm which evaluates profiles, but they didn't answer. So I want to ask you guys to help me if you can. I would really appreciate that.

So let's start. I want to apply to top 20 BS and want to know if I even should consider this, because I am not sure if I meet the criteria.

I am 25 years old male from Central Asian country. I am considering to take gmat test and the score will be approximately 710+ (I know that I can do this at least).

My GPA is 3.2 is really low, but for my excuse I was studying and working simultaneously at that time. I was working in international bank (which is one of the leading) for 3 years and implemented anti-money laundering process and also improved currency control in bank. Also I was working for 1.5 year in the one of the big4 audit firms as an auditor, but realized that I see myself more in investment banking rather than in audit. And finally I am working in the leading local investment bank for about 1-1.5 year.

I was studying in a local university which is not much reputable on the international level. Major finance.

Achievements:
I became best trader in my country on local exchange and also was a chairman in investment club at the university. Also as an extracurricular: was a volunteer as a teacher for elementary school, teaching business and economics basis for them. Also organized and performed first and still the best dancing flashmob in the country (this is just funny)

Career goals: investment banking – I want to develop this industry in my country and to do it more competitive in order to decrease the overall ineffectiveness and corruption in the system.

Apart from the above, I have also problem with my English (as you may see from this comment). I think that I need to improve it a little bit. I did not take IELTS or TOEFL yet.

Do I have any chances to get to MBA? Yale SOM is my priority, I like this school (I don’t know why, just like it), but I think to try other top-tier BS as well. Any advice?
Also I have passed 10 out of 14 exams in ACCA and have passed I level of CFA. Do these certificates (even though they are in progress) benefit somehow?

Thanks in advance!

Thank you for your comment. Yes, you are right. I am thinking about hiring a coach, because my level is very low as you can see. Do you think I can prepare myself for interview and essay in about 3-4 months?

Well, it depends on what kind of work experience do you have. Looking from the point of sector it does not matter where you worked (consulting, banking, etc.). You can look at the student profiles and there you will see some patterns. Some b-schools have around 20-30% of students coming from finance, 20% from consulting. It differs between schools. Based on that you will see what your odds of being accepted are. Looking at your profile I think you will not have any kind of problem here at any school. It is more important about what kind of experience do you have from the point of view of full time experience. You mentioned that you studied and worked at the same time. Were you employed full time? Most b-schools demand around 2 or 3 years of full time experience. So if you were to have 6 years of full time experience, it would be about time that you do an MBA. Soon it will be maybe more appropriate to go for an EMBA.

Just focus on GMAT, English, and essays. These will be the most important factors in your process.
