BB Corporate Banking vs MM IB Placement for Business school

Title says it all,

I’m a senior looking to apply to deferred admission programs. I receive a return offer from a strong group in doing corporate banking BB. However, wondering if I would look better in the eyes of admissions if I landed MM IB offer.

let me know what you all think please.

Can you go into a little more detail as to why? If I choose corporate banking should I just craft my story around how that will help me or should I craft it around lateraling to IB down the line?

Based on previous WSO threads, here's what you need to know:

BB Corporate Banking vs. MM IB for Business School Placement

Key Considerations:

  1. Brand Recognition:

    • BB Corporate Banking: Working at a Bulge Bracket (BB) bank often carries significant brand recognition, which can be advantageous for business school applications.
    • MM IB: Middle Market (MM) Investment Banking might not have the same level of brand prestige, but it can offer more hands-on experience and deal exposure.
  2. Experience and Skill Set:

    • BB Corporate Banking: Typically involves working with large, established clients and can provide a strong foundation in corporate finance.
    • MM IB: Often provides broader exposure to various aspects of deals, which can be appealing to business schools looking for well-rounded candidates.
  3. Career Trajectory:

    • BB Corporate Banking: May offer a more stable career path with opportunities to move into other areas within the bank.
    • MM IB: Can be a stepping stone to other high-finance roles, including Private Equity (PE) and larger IB roles, which are highly regarded by business schools.
  4. Networking Opportunities:

    • BB Corporate Banking: Access to a vast network of professionals and alumni, which can be beneficial for business school recommendations and future career moves.
    • MM IB: Smaller firms might offer closer relationships with senior bankers, which can lead to strong mentorship and personalized recommendations.

Conclusion:

  • For Business School Admissions:
    • If brand recognition and a stable career path are your priorities, BB Corporate Banking might be the better choice.
    • If you seek diverse deal experience and a potential stepping stone to other high-finance roles, MM IB could be more advantageous.

Ultimately, both paths have their merits, and your decision should align with your long-term career goals and the specific strengths you want to highlight in your business school applications.
