Age would not necessarily be an issue. What may be more important is whether you have a Master's degree and how good your grades were during your undergrad. The best PhD programmes in the UK for Management need at least a top 10% rank in your UG, alongside a Distinction at Master's level. You also would need a demonstrated interest in an area of research / some publications to be very competitive.
I know there are numerous Profs at the LSE who had a career in IB or Consulting and then went back to get their PhD, so I don't think age is an issue with the right qualifications.
