Columbia SPS Visiting Student for IB recruiting exposure?
I want to move to NYC to continue my finance career. Is the visiting student program worth it? There is for some reason a lot of hate toward Columbia SPS - I don't see why. Should I invest in this exchange program, or will it not give me the recruiting exposure?
Based on the most helpful WSO content, Columbia's School of Professional Studies (SPS) has faced criticism for its lack of direct recruiting pipelines into investment banking (IB). While the program provides a visa, a recognizable name on your resume, and the opportunity to network in NYC, it is not traditionally viewed as a strong feeder for IB roles. The skepticism stems from the fact that SPS is not on par with Columbia Business School (CBS) or other top-tier programs in terms of recruiting exposure and alumni networks in high finance.
Given your background in private equity and MBB consulting, you already have a strong foundation. If your primary goal is to break into IB, you might want to consider alternative strategies:
Networking Without SPS: You could leverage your existing experience and network to connect with professionals in NYC remotely before making the move. Many IB professionals are open to virtual coffee chats, especially if you have a compelling story and relevant experience.
Short-Term Programs or Bootcamps: Instead of SPS, consider targeted programs like WSO's Investment Banking Interview Prep or Financial Modeling Bootcamps. These are highly regarded and can help you refine your technical skills while networking with like-minded individuals.
Direct Applications and Headhunters: Focus on applying directly to IB roles or working with headhunters who specialize in placing candidates with your background. Your PE and consulting experience could already make you an attractive candidate.
Evaluate ROI: If you still consider SPS, weigh the cost of the program against the potential benefits. While it might provide a visa and some networking opportunities, the lack of a strong recruiting pipeline could limit its effectiveness for your specific goals.
Ultimately, while being in NYC can help with networking, SPS may not be the most efficient or impactful way to achieve your IB aspirations. Consider whether the investment aligns with your long-term career goals and explore other avenues that might offer better returns.
