Columbia Unviersity

Hello, not sure if this is the right thread/location, but Im choosing between three schools Columbia, NYU and Duke. Currently, I'm leaning towards Columbia as I love NYC, but the main concern part is online I've seen how people are saying Columbia has become facist, or the overall experience is now negative, or companies may think negatively if you go there. Lmk if you guys have any thoughts or opinions, thanks!

Based on the most helpful WSO content, Columbia University offers a strong platform for careers in finance, particularly due to its location in NYC. The proximity to Wall Street provides unparalleled opportunities for internships and networking, which many students leverage to build impressive resumes. However, there are some considerations to keep in mind:

  1. NYC Advantage: Columbia's location allows students to intern part-time during the academic year, which can be a significant advantage for building experience and connections. Many students have successfully transitioned to top buy-side and sell-side roles post-graduation.

  2. Core Curriculum: Columbia's rigorous Core Curriculum is a defining feature. While some students appreciate the intellectual foundation it provides, others find it restrictive. If you prefer a more flexible academic structure, this could be a factor to weigh.

  3. Perception and Experience: While Columbia is undoubtedly prestigious, some WSO threads mention mixed narratives about the campus culture and overall experience. Concerns about a "negative narrative" or "fascist" environment seem to be anecdotal and not reflective of the broader consensus. Many students report positive experiences, particularly those who actively engage with the opportunities available.

  4. Comparison with NYU and Duke:

    • NYU: Stern's reputation in finance is strong, and its NYC location offers similar networking advantages. However, NYU lacks a traditional campus experience, which some students find less appealing.
    • Duke: Known for its vibrant campus life, sports culture, and strong alumni network, Duke offers a more traditional college experience. While it may not have the same immediate access to NYC opportunities, it remains a top target for finance roles.

Ultimately, if you value the NYC experience and the opportunities it brings, Columbia is a fantastic choice. However, if you're looking for a more traditional college environment or have concerns about the Core Curriculum, Duke might be worth considering. NYU is also a strong contender if you prioritize flexibility and finance-specific opportunities.

day to day of 95% of students is not impacted by what you hear in the news, recruiting has not been impacted either. for IB recruiting Columbia is still top tier and better than both your other options
