Cornell EMBA/MS Healthcare, Brown/IE, CBS/LBS EMBAG, Wharton Global, or nah?
Hey All,
Thanks for the great work you all do at Wallstreet Oasis to keep folks informed and help them make tough decisions.
Speaking of tough decisions, here's one-
I am in my late 30s, work in healthcare strategy, and am from North America, but I would like to focus on more of a global career (GCC, Europe, Asia, Africa, etc.) - with optionality to stay in North America if that doesn't pan out / I miss home.
I have a strong undergrad degree, earned my first Master's at a top Ivy, and have a second Master's at Oxbridge.
I am interested in the start-up world, VC, consulting, and tech.
I have the decision to make to join an EMBA program, as my background is not in business, and I fell face-first into strategy 11 years ago, but I would like to level up a bit and get the credential, knowledge, and also am looking forward to learning again.
I would also like to use the program to advance my career, either in my current role or to move to consulting at an MBB as an experienced hire, my choices so far:
1. Brown/IE (online mainly) program with $$ - cool to have a strong brand like Brown and an international element in Madrid with IE?
2. Cornell EMBA/MS Healthcare program with $$ interesting to get a EMBA and an MS in healthcare or maybe confusing?
3. CBS/LBS EMBA-Global program no $ seems like a cool partnership, in-person, and gives two strong brands - confused if LBS is actually super strong and if CBS has a good rep?
4. Wait and apply to the Wharton Global program (primarily online) - no confusion Wharton is a beast, but, also online is... tough. I received a 154 on my Executive Assessment, Wharton suggested I would be a stronger candidate with a 156? I did not study for my first one, but am not interested in retaking, to be honest.
5. Other program?
I want to focus on the brand, prestige, and strength of the cohort to help me elevate.
What do you think I should do?
At EMBA level, go for a massive brand name. Aim for Wharton or CBS/LBS :)
Is CBS/LBS EMBA-Global strong enough? Or do you think deferring and trying the Wharton route is worth it?
Wharton is a stronger name if you can get it.
Thanks for that and it makes sense, i'm just contemplating the work to defer, re-do the exec assessment, and apply.
Versus, going with CBS/LBS programme.
Do you think the delta is that large? (this would be the wharton global (online program) I can't do the in-person version due to schedule.)
What is your take of the CBS/LBS brand?
CBS/LBS is also a good brand name, this parameter is key at a later stage of your career :)
cheers- thanks for the perspective
Wharton
You have a solid education & work experience, if you want to build it further Wharton will by far open the most doors for you.
The CBS/LBS mashup is tempting & I’ve heard good things about the program, but the multi-school programs tend to dilute the brand impact & do you really need LBS being US based?
I’d hard avoid Brown / IE & Cornell. Brown doesn’t have a business school & their MBA partnership is seen as a joke. Your cohort is likely to be weak. You don’t want a line item on your CV that causes ppl to lol. IE also doesn’t really have a strong US network & is more Latam / Spain focused.
Cornell is a fine program & I get how throwing an extra masters in with the MBA is tempting, however the business school doesn’t come close to offering what Wharton or CBS/LBS does. The brand, network, alumni support & cohort quality just isn’t there vs W or CBS/LBS. I’ve also heard the program just isn’t very well run, it’s hard to hire good administrators in Ithaca.
Best of luck. Feel free to DM me anytime.
Your assessment is super helpful, thank you.
I've declined Brown and Cornell.
Here is the question: In principle, I can start CBS/LBS in a few month. OR, I can defer and submit my Wharton application by October 14th.. (I won't meet the Jan 14th deadline - mainly due to recommendations not coming in on time)
The implications here are that I would delay starting a program by a year, AND I would have to re-do an arduous application process/interview schedule.
Do you think the delta between the two is worth going through that journey? That's really where I think I'm stuck.
