Does pre-MBA work have any bearing?

I know that for buyside roles, it's important that you did PE/HF pre-MBA. That's not what I'm thinking about.

Say that you are interested in the corporate side of things, and want to go into corporate strategy/development or work at a startup. Once you are in an MBA program, does it hold much relevance whether you were in something "prestigious" like banking or MBB, or could you have just done some random job at a startup.

I guess what I'm thinking about is whether it even makes sense to grind your 20s away pre-MBA (unless you're dead set on PE), or if you should just get whatever job and live life.

Based on the most helpful WSO content, here's what you need to know:

  1. Pre-MBA Work Experience Relevance:

    • For corporate strategy/development or startup roles, your pre-MBA work experience does hold relevance, but it doesn't necessarily have to be in a "prestigious" field like banking or MBB.
    • Your resume and skills will be more important than the specific job title or company prestige. For roles in Tech, CorpFin, Corp Dev, etc., having a strong resume and relevant skills can be more critical than the prestige of your previous job.
  2. MBA Program Impact:

    • An MBA program can enhance your chances of getting jobs you were already qualified for without the MBA. It takes a door that's slightly open and opens it further, rather than opening entirely new doors that were previously shut.
    • The network and branding from an MBA, especially from a top program, can provide optionality and make it easier to slot into good-paying corporate, consulting, or finance roles.
  3. Work-Life Balance Pre-MBA:

    • Grinding away in your 20s in a prestigious job isn't the only path. If you're not dead set on PE, you can pursue a job that aligns more with your interests and lifestyle.
    • The key is to build a strong resume and develop relevant skills that will be valued in your desired post-MBA roles.

In summary, while prestigious pre-MBA work can be beneficial, it's not the only path to success in corporate strategy/development or startup roles. Focus on building a strong resume and relevant skills, and leverage the network and branding of your MBA program to enhance your career opportunities.
