Economics at Univeristy

I have offers for economics at Leeds University and finance for Bristol University but am stuck for which one to pick. I know that economics is a more highly regarded degree but Leeds doesn’t have the same reputation that Bristol so not sure. Any help would be appreciated.

Based on the most helpful WSO content, here's what you need to know:

  1. University Reputation:

    • Bristol University: Generally has a stronger reputation compared to Leeds, especially in the context of finance and investment banking. This can be crucial for CV screening and initial job placements.
    • Leeds University: While it may not have the same level of prestige as Bristol, it still offers a solid education in economics.
  2. Degree Focus:

    • Economics: Often considered a versatile and highly regarded degree. It provides a strong foundation in analytical and quantitative skills, which are valuable in various finance roles.
    • Finance: Directly aligned with careers in investment banking, asset management, and other finance-related fields. It may offer more specialized courses that are directly relevant to your career goals.
  3. Career Opportunities:

    • Bristol University: According to previous WSO threads, Bristol has a good track record of sending students to investment banking roles. The finance degree might give you a more direct path into the industry.
    • Leeds University: While it may not have the same level of placement as Bristol, an economics degree from Leeds can still open doors, especially if you leverage internships and networking opportunities effectively.
  4. Student Life and Personal Fit:

    • Consider the campus environment, city life, and overall fit for you personally. A university where you feel comfortable and engaged can significantly impact your academic performance and overall experience.

Recommendations:

  • If your primary goal is to break into investment banking or a finance-related career, Bristol University with a finance degree might be the better choice due to its stronger reputation and specialized focus.
  • If you have a broader interest in economics and value the versatility of the degree, Leeds University could still be a good option, especially if you plan to supplement your studies with relevant internships and networking.

Ultimately, both choices have their merits, and your decision should align with your career goals and personal preferences.
