Entrepreneurship Impact on B School

WSO Friends and Fam,

I’ve been working at a private equity shop for two years now at the associate / senior assoc. level and have a desire to try something new. I’m considering stepping out to work for a relatives business for a few years and was wondering if that would have a negative, neutral or positive impact on getting into an MBA program in my late 20s early 30s if this path is not working out? The role would initially be entry level at the company for the foreseeable future but quickly progress through the ranks.

Many thanks for the input!

I broke out of the 2 + 2 path and did something entrepreneurial and also explored b-school so have some perspective here (albeit my exp was not exactly the same as yours).

In summary, you'll be fine for b-school provided you're not too old when you apply (32.. maybe 33). If you have a solid bank and PE fund on your CV, b-schools will still see you as a safe bet and that you just tried doing something entrepreneurial for a few years. M7 is very doable still, and honestly if you position your story correctly, HBS and GSB might be more welcoming as you are a differentiated candidate from the masses of 2+2 applying each year.
