Exchange semester grades affecting HSW application

I have good grades, but I took it very chill during my exchange semester. On the transcript from my home university, all grades I got during my exchange semester are reported on a pass/fail basis. In other words, the poor exchange semester grades do not factor into my GPA. Should I include the actual grades I got during my exchange semester in my application for an MBA, and if I do, will this affect my chance at HSW?

Based on previous WSO threads, here's what you need to know:

  1. Transcript Reporting: Since your home university reports your exchange semester grades on a pass/fail basis, these grades do not impact your GPA. This can be advantageous as it keeps your GPA intact.

  2. Application Strategy: When applying to HSW (Harvard, Stanford, Wharton), it's generally advisable to follow the official transcript provided by your home university. If the exchange grades are not included in your GPA, you are not obligated to report them separately unless explicitly asked by the application.

  3. Impact on Application: If you choose to disclose your actual grades from the exchange semester, it could potentially raise questions if they are significantly lower than your usual performance. However, if your overall academic record is strong and you have compelling reasons for the lower grades (e.g., cultural adjustment, language barriers), you can address this in your application essays or interviews.

  4. Holistic Review: Remember that MBA programs, especially top-tier ones like HSW, conduct a holistic review of your application. They consider various factors such as work experience, leadership roles, extracurricular activities, and personal statements. A single semester with lower grades, especially if not factored into your GPA, is unlikely to be a deal-breaker if the rest of your profile is strong.

In summary, you are not required to include the actual grades from your exchange semester if they are reported as pass/fail by your home university. If you do choose to disclose them, be prepared to explain any discrepancies and focus on the overall strength of your application.
