FT MBA Graduate Assistantships - worth it?
Received a full scholarship for a FT MBA. This includes $8,400 graduate assistant pay for 3 semesters. There were limited spots available, so was happy to hear I was offered a position, but they said it is 10 hours per week and not sure if it is worth my time. Money is not an issue - I just received an inheritance.
What I might rather be doing:
- Sleeping
- Going out on the town with fellow students (networking/bars)
- Studying to get a perfect GPA
- Applying for internships and FT jobs
Things I might gain from a graduate assistantship:
- Networking with professors and establishing a relationship greater than just being a student
- Meeting other students and helping students
- Some extra bullets on my resume
WWYD? I need to give this some thought, but leaning towards not taking the graduate assistantship. Also can graduate assistants date students? Would suck to meet hot chicks and not be able to date. But, I'm sure fellow MBA students could date each other. My siblings want me to take the graduate assistantship - I'd be disappointing them, so not looking forward to that conversation. But, I want to forge my own path and it is attractive having a light schedule. I really do sleep a lot.
Based on the most helpful WSO content, here's what you need to consider when deciding whether to take the graduate assistantship:
Pros of Taking the Graduate Assistantship:
Cons of Taking the Graduate Assistantship:
Key Considerations:
On Dating as a Graduate Assistant:
Policies on dating students vary by institution, but generally, relationships between graduate assistants and students they directly supervise or assist are discouraged or prohibited. However, dating fellow MBA students (who are peers) is typically fine.
Final Thoughts:
If your primary focus is on networking, enjoying the MBA experience, and securing a top-tier job post-graduation, you might lean towards declining the assistantship. However, if you see value in the relationships and resume boost it offers, it could be worth the commitment. Ultimately, weigh the opportunity cost of those 10 hours per week against what you could achieve without the assistantship.
