Gap Year (Post-HS, Pre-Uni)
Hi, I am deferring offers of admission for one year to two Canadian targets (Queens Commerce/Ivey AEO) and will decide at a later date as to which one I will attend. In the meantime and in my year off I will be volunteering abroad, most likely in Madagascar with Marine Conservation (6 months) and Tanzania for Community Development (2 months). So my question is; how does volunteer work/ a gap year look to prospective employers, specifically summer intern recruiting? How will they interpret the fact that my gap year volunteering/work has absolutely nothing to do with finance?
nobody will even know unless you bring it up pointless question
It will be an interesting talking point in interviews, but it won't get you the job or lose it for you. Re: nothing to do with finance - people don't want to hire finance robots, it's good to have other interests. Enjoy yourself and worry less about how every decision you make will affect recruiting.
Just relax and stop fretting about what you'll do next year. No idea why you are deferring though.
You're young enough that you should do what you want to do without thinking about employment after college. Go have fun and enjoy life. Think about it - if you got dinged somewhere for having done what you wanted to and felt was right, is that a place you want to work?
