GEMFIN program University of Geneva

Hey, there is this program in university of Geneva called GEMFIN, its a MAS ( Master of Advanced Studies) in Finance, its kind of expensive (42000 CHF) specially compared to other MFin programs in Switzerland since they are mostly around 700CHF. It seems its targeted for the people who have rather irrelevant background to finance and banking such as myself, it is a new program and its been around for 3 maybe 4 years tops and covers various Finance models in 9 months. I have not got an offer yet but i sort of got a green light in an interview.

I didnt see any posts here related to it so i wanted to know if you guys know if it holds water on Switzerland job market, or is it any good specially for someone like me that is trying to break through finance.

Your main questions are:

1. Does anyone know what the masters is
2. Would it be good for me

Starting with #1:
I have done extensive research into European masters and have never heard of this programme.

By the looks of it (from their LinkedIn post), there are only 20-25ish people per class (kinda weird).

My usual advice would be to reach out to people who are studying/have studied this in the past, but I have struggled to find even a couple of LinkedIn profiles of people who graduated this programme (kind of a red flag again).

Their brochure doesn’t have any employment information. Neither does the programme page.

So what is this masters for? From their brochure:

Gain the analytical rigor needed for leadership positions in finance
¡ Learn to apply advanced quantitative methods used in the financial
industry
¡ Acquire technological competencies to manage portfolios in the fintech context
¡ Strengthen teamwork and project management skills
¡ Develop a professional network to share knowledge and expertise all from around the world

Kinda sounds like a lot of generic words.

And to top it all of you have to pay 42k + live in a HCOL area.

Onto #2 - how can anyone tell you this, if you haven’t provided your profile, etc. Have you been accepted anywhere else?

To be completely honest, I would caution anyone from doing this masters (even if it did cost 700CHF). With this price tag, unless you’re very loaded and just want a diploma - what’s the point?

Did you ask them during the interview what job prospects this masters leads to, etc?

I did look em up in Linkdin and didnt find much as well, and although its the University of Geneva, this program seems like a bit of money grab to me so i was wondering if anyone actually heard about it.

On the interview they said most of their students did land on a job without fluency of german or French which seems too good to be true and didnt say FO or BO and they were not even interested that much in my IELTS or GRE score which was a bit of a red flag to me.

I might have a shot on EBS in Germany and have conditional offer from Henley Business school corporate finance and i'm waiting to hear from Exeter, Durham and Bayes in UK and Vlerick and Antwerp Management School in Belgium.

My profile:

- 30 years old

- interior architecture (GPA: 3.2)

- a few certificates and credentials in finance

- GRE 320

- 1 year of relevant work experience as a business consultant
