GMAT or GRE for MSF

Hey all,

I'm planning on taking a graduate entrance in fall/early winter, and am unsure as to whether to take the GRE or GMAT (if it even matters). I want to pursue either an MsF (probably) or an MSFE (less likely). I won't have time between now and then to study effecitvely for both (I plan on hitting it hard).

Factors I'm considering include: 1. Which schools/programs take which test (most seem to take GRE, but it seems that all take the GMAT for both programs i'm considering)

  1. How competitive I am against others who take the same test. I have a math minor to keep doors to an MSFE program open. However, if I go that route, I'll be competing against the very quantitatively savvy engineers/mathematicians. If I take the GRE it seems as though I'm competing against them as well as business majors, whereas the GMAT puts me up mostly against business majors. This seems like it would make me more competitve.

Any thoughts on which exam is best? Any factors I should be considering that I've overlooked?

Thanks!

Just depends on the program. Read their material.

I'll do what I can to help ya'll. But, the game's out there, and it's play or get played.

TheLastCallMSF programs actually prefer the GRE although they certainly take both. Your quant score is great, so don't worry about it.

What programs are you referring to? I'm pretty sure the GMAT is the standard and the GRE is the one that they "accept".

'Before you enter... be willing to pay the price'

So is there any advantage I'll gain by taking the GMAT and using it for application rather than my GRE?

I mean, my assumption right now is that my 99 percentile GRE is going to be valued over a 95 percentile GMAT, all else being equal. If that's un-true and there is a significant break given to those that took the GMAT then it would seem favorable to go that route.

Don't think it will matter much. Most MSF programs are more lenient when it comes to scores since there isn't a true ranking yet. Once that happens the GMAT score arms race will begin.

Never heard the 2-3 rule. I think 5 years is pretty standard. Schools only care about the GMAT to make their class profile look nice. Past mid 600's the test isn't that predictive. IMO, the best predictor for MSF success if UG transcripts and the persons resume.
