GRE next week/MSF/MMS Apps

Hey guys!

I have a few questions. Firstly, I'm applying to MSF programs for this fall and wanted some insight. However, first off, I have a HUGE problem.

My GRE is next week and at the moment I have been getting crappy scores. The most I got was 1030!!!!!!!!!!!!! I'm really worried about the exam and was thinking about postponing it. However, I have done this once before and I dont want to miss any deadlines for apps.

What do you guys think? Take the exam and hope for the best or delay another couple of weeks and try harder?

Secondly, any tips for MSF programs? I'm aiming for WUSTL, Duke's MMS, Ivey WO, Queens MSF (Toronto) and Vanderbilt.

I'm also looking at Columbia's new Financial Economics program. Can anyone shed any light on this?

My background is History grad from a top 20 UK university, with a 3.5 GPA. Wanted to become lawyer so did conversion and masters but decided this wasnt for me after beginning work so really looking into IB, M&A or Consulting (primarily because Duke and Ivey place really well in this)

Any help will be appreciated!

Thanks

ANTI have the new Columbia program on my site. 2 years, more analytical. Think mini PhD.

I would take the GMAT. Moe schools accept it.

What do you think, about someone with my background's chances to be accepted (providing a good GRE)!

kimboTake the GMAT. I'm not sure if all those programs take the GRE. also, how much math do you have? for Wash U you need calc 3 minimum.

A little background, but nothing I cant catch up with in classes now.

I've paid to take the GRE already so I think to stick with that but I checked with the majority of schools, they do taker the GRE.

kimboDon't know your full profile, but id consider Duke mms and Virginia ms commerce.

I'm considering Duke and Ivey WO. UVA, I'm not eligible for as they are for those who just graduated and I graduated a year ago. What are your thoughts on the Ivey program (MSC in Management)?

Ideally, I want to work in either IB, M&A, S&T or management consultancy.

Dude, a 1030 on the GRE is absolutely atrocious. If you you're not getting at least a 1300, you shouldn't bother taking it. What is the breakdown of the 1030? Is it 515-515? 770-300? 700 - 370?

No matter how you slice it, it's just bad. For quant, if you can't get at least a 700, you won't have any luck. And for verbal, you should be getting at least 560. Keep in mind that for MFEs, anything sub 800 for quant is an auto-ding at top schools. And from my understanding, MSFs are still fairly quantitative in nature. And the math on the GRE is extremely easy, so there's no excuse for getting sub 700 on it. And if you are clearing 700 on the quant part, there's zero excuse for a history major to get sub 350 on th verbal section. In fact, there's zero excuse for a 14 year old fresh chinese immigrant to get sub 350 on verbal.

My advice is to postpone the GRE until you're scoring at least 1300 on your practice tests. (700 at least on quant).

Keep in mind that even 1300 is on the low side. You aren't competitive until you break 1400.

I like the logic and tone of your argument, and I agree that a 1030 puts you smack in the middle of the 2nd week of August of the summer between 3rd and 4th grade, but a sub-800 quant is not an auto-ding at any school. I think it should be, but its not.

Dude, thanks for the kick up the ass! I'm really struggling with my marks. One one occasion I did the CAT and I got 1280, which isnt too bad I thought (720Q/560V). Most of the schools I mentioned have an average of around 720. Then the next time I did another a couple of days later, I got that 1030 (560Q/470V). I did another one today and got 880!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

I'm dying here man. I know the stuff but for some reason its not working out for me.

Any tips on how to tackle the Quant and Verbal? I postponed my exam for another 2 weeks but in the process missed the deadline for WUSTL as they wont let international students apply past the 14th Feb!
