GS Compliance -> M7
Can someone from a compliance background get into a top MBA program? I only chose compliance because I used to be a paralegal (but no longer want to go to law school). I am hoping I can go to a decent MBA program down the line and transition to a FO role or consulting. Is this possible? Any advice is appreciated.
May be a long shot but brand name + good scores can help. Also consider Vandy’s MBA or masters in finance. Places pretty decent and not as competitive
What would you say the difference in exit opps from an MFin program vs MBA look like? Is a good SM hedge fund from an MFin doable?
Short answer: doable, given right score, stand out experiences, heck anyone entering M7 would need these already.
Another way to position yourself up for an easier way in to break into a top sounding school with a relatively less competitive run would be MSFs
Any random background can filter into banking out of a half decent MBA program
Not only possible, I've seen it multiple times before. Had a couple classmates from compliance at my MBA coming from top financial services firms (GS/MS/JPM/BX/KKR/TPG etc.) get into the school and go into top IB/consulting. Always thought it's the same role in compliance no matter which firm you're working for, but MBA admissions salivate over the brand name. Not as competitive a job as most in the program, but you'll prob get in undeservingly on brand and once you're there it doesn't matter.
