I have been accepted to both of these programs. Vandy places more emphasis on quant, Bocconi offers a more rounded program. After completion, I hope to go to work as an analyst for a boutique or mid-market IBD focused on alt energy and/or clean technologies. I am a US citizen but would prefer to work in Europe if I had the opportunity to.

Which school would you pick? If you hire in the US, is Bocconi familiar enough that you would consider a candidate from there? What about Vanderbilt in the EU?

If you want to work in Europe, Bocconi is a clear choice - however you will be targeted by Italian teams within the banks, so fluent Italian will be a must.

I say go to Vandy and get a job in Houston as an energy banker after the program, that's your best bet?

I can only advise you based on close friends and their experiences, I should note they did masters programs...
I have a girlfriend who is a US citizen, native Italian, who went to Bucconi for her masters. She's had a tough time getting a decent job in Europe or even in the US for that matter. My perception of Bucconi is that it's a school that's highly regarded for turning out great marketing folks but not so much so for finance or careers in IB.
I have another girlfriend who did the 1Y MBA track at Vanderbilt and she has found jobs readily... albeit not in banking. This girlfriend is now a product manager in NY for L'Oreal.
There was a good discussion thread on Vanderbilt a few months ago. I think the consensus was that Vanderbilt is a well recognized program, just not for banking... anyways, search thru the forum to find it.
Loads of Bocconi grads in IB+S&T London. But to get in isn't a given, you'd have to make sure you get the right internships... even moreso than someone doing an MSc in the UK. Vanderbilt's unknown in Europe.
Girls in Milan: look great but complicated and high maintenance.
