How do I effectively learn to stop helping my academic competitors?

For example, at university, all in 5 mins, educated a frenemy on better course subject and uni for his masters program which ill probably also apply for, educated him on the graduate system, told him how to make his assignment better..things i spent time researching why do help people that don't want to me do well..? argh

Cost Benefit Analysis - the cost of helping others is far lesser than the benefit you receive by possessing this trait/personal quality. Not to mention now the guy/girl subconsciously owes you something. Not saying that you should think like that about every situation, but even from an egoistic standpoint it's the right thing to do so stop whining about trivial stuff.
