How to balance ambition with just keeping a job during these times?

Business school adcoms like to see strong career growth, lots of promotions etc but what happens when all that is not possible in a downturn? I'm finding it hard to find a balance between wanting to be very ambitious and keeping my job. A layoff would totally destroy my B-school chances since my GPA is below the class averages and I'm ORM
