Indiana University Placements

Have seen really good placements for IU this cycle, placing everywhere and a huge rx pipeline my friends have said. Curious about everyone's thoughts and how competitive the workshop really is. Have a buddy there, and he seems to know more than any of us recruiting.

Indiana University's Kelley School of Business, particularly its Investment Banking Workshop (IBW), has a strong reputation for placements, especially in investment banking. However, the workshop is highly competitive, and gaining admission is no easy feat. Here's what you need to know:

  1. Placement Success:

    • The IBW places around 80 candidates annually into investment banking roles, with a significant portion going to top firms.
    • Most placements are in NYC (~70%) and Chicago, with a few in other cities.
    • The program has seen students land roles at prestigious firms like Blackstone, PJT, and other top-tier banks.
  2. Competitiveness of the Workshop:

    • Admission to the IBW is highly selective, with a minimum GPA requirement of 3.60 to apply. However, exceptions are made for diversity candidates or those with strong connections.
    • Subjective factors like Greek life involvement, networking with upperclassmen, and relationships with the IBW professor play a significant role.
    • Even candidates with a 3.80+ GPA can be overlooked in favor of those deemed a better "social fit."
  3. Challenges and Politics:

    • The process is described as "political," with factors like fraternity connections and social dynamics influencing outcomes.
    • Networking with current workshop members and building relationships early (e.g., during freshman year) is crucial.
  4. Opportunities Outside the Workshop:

    • While the IBW is a significant advantage, it's not the only path to success. Many students secure investment banking roles without being part of the workshop, though it is more challenging.
    • IU has strong on-campus recruiting (OCR) for middle-market banks and some bulge brackets, making it possible to break into IB with hard work and strategic networking.

In summary, the IBW at IU Kelley is a fantastic opportunity but comes with intense competition and a degree of subjectivity. For those who don't make it into the workshop, there are still pathways to success, though they require extra effort and determination.
