Is Business School Right for Me?
Hello all!
I've recently started thinking about going to business school. Here is a bit about me:
-UC Berkeley Graduate (class of 2012). majored in Biochemistry and Molecular Biology. I think my GPA was around 3.3-3.4 (can't remember precisely). Graduated in 3.5 years. Was pre-phd -Was a funded researcher as undergrad for 1.5 years in large lab, wrote thesis -Worked at UCSF lab as research associate studying host pathogen interactions of HIV for about 2 years. Was published in tier 1 Scientific Journal. Decided I did not want to get a phd anymore -Transferred to Procurement and Strategic Sourcing department at UCSF, was life science analyst-10 months -Worked at large life science company for 1 year in Sales -Worked at another large life science company in channel sales/marketing -Now work for small German biotech company in sales/business development covering West Coast- travel internationally 2-3 times/year, attend science conferences around U.S., interact with customers, etc.
My question is... should I even think about getting an MBA? My life right now is pretty chill... I don't even work 40 hours per week. When I am not at conferences, in Europe, or at my accounts, I get to work remotely at home. This is probably due to the fact that I have branded myself as a technical sales/BD person in biotech/life sciences. I've been thinking about going into life science consulting but am a bit scared of the life style change and hours I'd have to put in. However, I am already yearning for something a bit more intellectually challenging. Maybe even switching industries (gasp!)
Also, what type of program could I get into? I jumped around a lot (although in the same industry and always moved up in position and salary (always $20K-$30K) because I wanted to sample different positions in the industry. I would have to take the GMAT of course, so that would play a large role. Would top programs even consider me with my odd background?
Any thoughts would be welcome! I've been struggling with the thought of going back to school for an MBA- I'm not sure I am the consultant/finance type, but I don't want to be branded as the Biotech Sales person forever either. However, I'm sure with enough time I can network eventually and get other types of jobs. Thoughts?
