I delayed my graduation and have mixed feelings about it. A few things I would consider:

  • Financial situation—are you paying or are your parents? If your parents, how much of a burden is it? If it’s a non-factor it’s a non-factor, but if it is, it might be relevant.
  • How much do you like playing ball/ what is the opportunity? Sports end for everyone someday. You will need to accept this eventually. That said, if you are close to winning a title of some sort or just really know on your death bed you will wish you had another season, it might be worth it. But, be aware that at this point any work you spend on sports is hindering your career not helping it. No one will give af how good you were once you start in finance and by that point you might wish you had a year of learning instead of a year of a sport. Again, it’s a trade off and that trade off might be worth it, but just be aware you are making that.
  • Recruiting—do you have a job/ know the field you wish to go into? Giving more time can help with this if early on you were more focused on other things.

For context, I delayed by a year and it wasn’t a significant financial burden. It resulted in me getting an extra season and I also was able to recruit for IB which I wouldn’t have been able to do because I started learning finance late. The reason I say I have mixed feelings is because the extra season felt more stressful because I knew my career was ending and I needed to focus on my future rather than enjoying the moment. Further, once I left school all my friends were a year ahead and I found myself as the old analyst getting told what to do by people my age. Ultimately, age matters less the older you get, but for those first few years just length of tenure really matters and I found it frustrating. I know others who did things like taking a gap year before IB etc. I suppose it all really is a personal preference thing, but my best advice is view it from the perspective of, “what will I regret the least” if you think looking back a part of you will always wish you had another season, do it. But, if you are just trying to delay the real world and aren’t really invested, I would say you’d be better off graduating.
