Is there free time for hobbies at M7 programs?

Hi all,

I've been fortunate enough to get accepted into Kellogg Round 1 of this application cycle, and will matriculate there.

My goal isn't investment banking or management consulting, but rather, pursuing a f500 corporate marketing career, for which Kellogg is a good fit.

I was wondering if I would have free time outside of the program (classes, homework, recruiting events, networking, etc.) to engage in my hobbies. I'm really passionate about music - have played the drums for 14 years and done EDM production for 2 years.

I have an electronic drumset (which is really quiet, you plug in headphones to hear yourself play) which I've practice on for about 1.5-2 hours a day, 6 days a week, during my career. I play in a rock band and jazz band, and record myself doing drum covers of songs, and upload them to YouTube.

I was just wondering if I could still pursue this hobby while at Kellogg, or if there wouldn't be any free time. I went to undergrad at UChicago, where academics were so intense I basically had to give up my drumming/music avocation :/

Thanks!! :)

At least two music majors I know are in m7. But don't dream about this skill alone helpful for b-school because the two I met had high fly career pre MBA

You'll have time if you make time. Academics can be pretty light if you want them to be.

You can't do everything you'll want in b-school so it will take from other priorities but you won't be the only one devoting free time to music.

I went to Booth, we had a club for musicians who would get together and jam over their two years and there are multiple opportunities to play for classmates at bars in downtown Chicago. I'd imagine Kellogg does the same. There is also an annual battle of the bands between the two schools at a legit music venue, it's pretty epic.

OMG Battle of the Bands between Booth and Kellogg? Ok, I really really want to get into one of these two just to compete in this.

You’ll definitely have sufficient time to pursue hobbies. Business school is whatever you want to make of it. If you want to dive headfirst into academics, go for it. If you’d rather play sports, hit the recruiting path hard, go out every night, the choice is ultimately yours. In general, there is sufficient time to do a range of activities well; you don’t need to choose just one.
