Kellogg or Stern?
Been at a tiny IB for a few years and I wanna get into private equity. I’m going back to get my MBA and realize I may need to get an in-between job to bridge the gap. I’m thinking a good consulting job to get the stamp of approval and move on from there. I want to end up in NYC after school. (1) It seems Kellogg is a better school overall, but not sure it has the reach to NYC to make up for it. (2) Is Stern a stronger name for PE in the long run? You’re thoughts? Thanks very much.
Take a look at the bios of associates/partners at PE shops in both NYC and Chicago, you'll see how each school has a sphere of influence locally. Many Kellogg alumni run/work at Chitown PE firms, and vice versa for Stern.
Kellogg is a MUCH stronger school than Stern, including in NYC private equity. Not even a debate IMO.
I interviewed with a handulf of MBA programs including Stern a month back and my interviewer (Stern alumni and IB associate) communicated that one of Stern's weaknesses were its PE placement. Although, this is really a weakness of any top bschool maybe excluding HBS. Any top bschool will be challenging for you to transition into PE without previous investor experience. Goodluck.
Any others, esp from Kellogg alum in finance/PE?
good luck breaking into PE from either school without prior experience unless its at a dusty ass 2 person shop with 20 cents of aum
thanks! any helpful points addressing either of the questions I actually asked?
i think its a no brainer that kellogg is better for PE regardless of geography than Stern. However, most (99.9%) recruiting is done off-campus and your previous banking experience will matter. I don't think its impossible for you but I know people will top-tier investment banking experience and prior PE that really struggled to land something decent post-mba so I think it will be an incredibly difficult jump to make
