Lateral vs. MBA
Fortunate to have gotten into H/S for my MBA post MF associate program. However, I’m starting to get cold feet given the state of the market (won’t know if I can come back until second year, and even then don’t think it want to).
I also recently got an offer to lateral to a solid UMM shop as a senior associate with (presumably) clear path to VP.
I’m excited about b school and feels hard to turn down given the difficulty of getting in from PE these days, but I’m scared about finding a job coming out.
What would you do between the two options?
Choosing between a lateral move to a UMM shop and attending H/S for your MBA is a significant decision, and both options have their merits. Based on the most helpful WSO content, here are some key considerations to help you weigh your options:
Option 1: Lateral to UMM Shop
Option 2: H/S MBA

Final Thoughts
If you’re passionate about PE and the UMM shop offers a strong path to VP, the lateral move could be a great choice. However, if you value the optionality, network, and prestige of an H/S MBA—and are willing to take on the risks of post-MBA recruiting—it’s hard to pass up such a rare opportunity. Ultimately, it comes down to your long-term goals and risk tolerance.
