For breaking into Investment Banking (IB) at Bulge Bracket (BB) or Elite Boutique (EB) firms in cities like Frankfurt (FRA), Munich (MUC), London (LDN), or Zurich (ZRH), here's how the programs compare based on the most helpful WSO content:

1. LBS MFA (Master in Financial Analysis):

  • Strengths:
    • Strong brand recognition in London and across Europe.
    • Excellent placement into IB and PE roles, particularly in London.
    • Extensive alumni network and career services tailored for finance roles.
    • High-quality cohort with a focus on early-career professionals.
  • Considerations:
    • Larger cohort size compared to some other programs.
    • Heavily London-centric, which may be less advantageous for FRA/MUC/ZRH placements.

2. LSE MSc Finance:

  • Strengths:
    • Globally recognized brand, especially strong in Europe.
    • Rigorous academic curriculum with a focus on quantitative finance.
    • Strong placement into IB roles across Europe, including FRA/MUC/ZRH.
    • Access to a vast alumni network and proximity to London’s financial hub.
  • Considerations:
    • Highly competitive admissions process.
    • Slightly less personalized career services compared to LBS.

3. HSG MBF (Master in Banking and Finance):

  • Strengths:
    • Exceptional reputation in the DACH region (Germany, Austria, Switzerland).
    • Strong placement into IB roles in FRA, MUC, and ZRH.
    • Smaller cohort size, offering a more personalized experience.
    • Strong connections with Swiss and German financial institutions.
  • Considerations:
    • Less recognized outside the DACH region compared to LBS and LSE.
    • Limited alumni network in London compared to LBS/LSE.

It really depends on where you ultimately want to work.

If your goal is to build a career in Switzerland (e.g., UBS, Julius Bär, or other international investment banks (JPM, GS etc.) with a presence here), pursuing a degree at HSG (MBF) can be a strong advantage. Being physically in Switzerland allows you to network more effectively, attend on-campus recruiting events and build relationships with local institutions early on. It also tends to simplify practical aspects such as visa processes and local market access.

LBS to cast the widest net possible in EMEA. Not everyone will know hsg and that's okay, if you prefer DACH then there's no school better than it.

LSE is quite academic, but ofc a top target.
