LSE Msc Accounting and Finance - Chance me!

Hi all,

I am planning on applying for a Masters in Accounting and Finance Programme for next year (start 2019), and my 'dream' school that I would love to attend is LSE. However I am not too sure of my chances, and would love some advice from the WSO community on my profile! Other Universities that I am considering are Imperial, UCL, Cass, Kings and Durham (in decreasing order of interest). Am I being realistic at all? Thanks!

Profile:

  • University: Bsc Economics and Politics, First Class (>70%), Top-20 Russell Group University (Think Birmingham/Nottingham/Manchester)

  • GMAT: Planning to take over Christmas - unable to take any sooner as I am sitting CFA Level 1 on Dec 1st.

  • Academic Financial Experience: Sitting CFA Level 1 this year. Passed several ACA examinations (Accounting, Management Information, Assurance). Several modules at university (Economics of Finance... ect).

  • Leadership Experience: Leadership position in Economics society, previously head boy of high school

  • Work Experience:

  1. 1 Year in Audit pre-university (not Big-4 but in top 6)
  2. Back Office Internship at BB
  3. Research Assistant on a project at university looking at FinTech firms (helped co-author an academic paper, not published yet)

Also would anyone be able to recommend the best time to apply? (I know the earlier the better but still)

Thank you so much in advance for your help!

Thank you for your response. Is there a high weight placed on CVs to your knowledge? Also is there anything you could suggest to improve my application? I plan on applying in January so will have a little bit of time post-CFA.

Thank you.

Sounds like a much better profile than mine and I'm also thinking about applying next year. I am taking IMC as oppose to CFA1 because I thought it would be tough with time constraints and non finance background. Then have to find time to study for GMAT whilst working.

I would say very realistic compared to what I have.

What is your profile roughly like if you do not mind me asking? The CFA is honestly killing me, although I'm having to try and squeeze it in the space of around 6 weeks due to other life problems - a lot of volume to cover! If anything I am far more concerned about the GMAT, I am likely only going to get one shot due to timing and finances... Good luck in your applications! (and thank you for the response)

2.1 engineering masters from similar uni to yours (might even be the same). About to finish up IMC and not even thought about GMAT yet. Been working a year in oil and gas doing strategic planning and managed to get some M&A experience. Unfortunately no internships. Yeah I saw your other post about CFA, sounds pretty hectic trying to study for it all so quickly. I know IMC has been quite a lot for me whilst I've been working.

Thanks and good luck to you. Will probably shoot you a PM if I end up studying for GMAT and think more about applications. Currently trying to do job apps for January and September 2019 entry and if I land anything will probably not end up doing MSc.

O&G is pretty interesting - and the M&A experience is so valuable, I wish I could get some! I was covering O&G when I was in audit, so have a soft spot for the industry. Re CFA - at least I am in University so can devote a significant amount of time!

Yes let me know how you are getting on - with a bit of luck I'll hopefully be seeing you next September! Good luck on the job search as well!
