Hey I would really like some opinion on this:
I am going to soon graduate from one of the top schools in Canada. But because I wasn't very happy there and I was involved with a lot of charities and student groups I didn't do so well academically. I would say that with my current GPA I stand no chance at all in applying to a top MBA program. But i have spent 3 semester away at different schools including an ivy in the US and my GPA from these schools are in the 3.5 range. So I hope this really confirms that my GPA suffered because I was unhappy at the school.
I am currently looking for a job. But I do realize that I will probably need an MBA someday and I also realize that unless you get an MBA from a brand name program it will be completely useless. Would you recommend me to give up my job search and apply for a Masters program at a school with a relatively good reputation and boost up my GPA. Then gain some work experience to apply for an MBA afterwards?
Also, how much advantage will you get in the grad school application process if you've already completed the CFA exam?

when making such an assumptuous (and ignorant) statement, realize that you may need a brand mba to get into a bb, hf, or pe group in nyc, but that there are plenty of people from non-top 10 schools getting great, interesting jobs out of their mba program.
i for instance know several people in my hometown of houston who are completing rice mba's and taking up associate position at regional bb's (primarily in houston)... rice is ranked 44th for its mba program.
those interesting jobs may not necessarily be investment banking, but are nonetheless prestigious and still pay well.
also,
why would you immediately abandon your job search, i'm assuming you graduated in December.
don't give up, shoot your resume out and get some leads.
well I am still in the process of interviewing with some positions.
it's just that I have been talking with some HR at a BB and a high profile head hunter recently and the MBA issue came up. For example, the HR at the BB told me although they look for different qualities, ultimately the one with the brand name MBA is chosen and the effectiveness of a lesser MBA program may not really help that much.
But do you think doing a masters now will help anyways in the future if I do decide to pursue an MBA/
Get a job first, then focus on more school.
If you went to a top school in canada, it shouldn't be too hard. If you can't do IB, do something else you value and think others would also value.

I agree with the others. Don't do an MA if your ultimate goal is IB. Remember you have to explain everything in the MBA process so you will need a good reason for wanting the MA. Graduate degrees aren't weighed very heavily in the MBA application process simply because not everyone has them. They consider it, but the undergrad GPA is far more important. You can take supplemental classes at a local college in basic business disciplines (get A's) and get a great GMAT score which will help to ease the fact that your GPA is low.
